Review: The Traveler by Joseph Eckert

4.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Release date: June 9, 2026

Scott Trader’s whole life changes when he jumps forward through time 24 hours. He doesn’t know how, or why, or how to stop it. But at 7:52 am, he jumps forward in time, doubling the time he’s missing with each jump. Scott is missing time with his wife and is missing his son, Lyle (once seven years old), growing up. Scott does everything he can to try to stop time jumping, and eventually his son makes this his own lifelong work.

The first half of this book, I was very invested in what would happen to Scott, and what the next time he jumped into would look like. I couldn’t put it down. The Traveler reminded me a lot of Dark Matter by Blake Crouch and I am a big fan of time-travel stories.

But by the middle of it I was confused. What else could possibly happen?! And the pacing slowed down significantly as Scott navigated times so futuristic they were somewhat difficult to grasp.

The end of this story was not what I expected, but I loved the way this story focused on Scott and Lyle’s father-son relationship. Scott grieved his wife and his son’s childhood so greatly, I wanted Scott to find his way back as well.

Thank you Tor and Netgalley for the advanced digital copy of this book!

Review: Field Guide for the Formerly Villainous by Autumn K. England

4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Release date: June 2, 2026

Oaklin, recently saved from an evil mind-controlling cult, escapes to a small town and buys a farm, swearing they will never ever use magic again. The ghost occupying Oaklin’s new home has other plans for them, sending them back into the world where they find community, friendship, and self-compassion.

This was such a sweet cozy fantasy, reminding me a lot of The House in the Cerulean Sea or Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries. The main character is working through a lot of trauma, as they feel so much guilt and shame over what they participated in with their cult. I absolutely loved the ending and Oaklin realizing they could forgive themselves.

Field Guide was so cute and I had fun reading it! If you like cozy fantasy, you will probably love this!

Review: Cleopatra by Saara El-Arifi

“I hoped to become a legend, but I forgot what all stories must have: a monster. I could not have known that monster would be me.”

3.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

This historical fiction “retelling” gives Cleopatra the mic to tell her own story, her way, a more modern perspective decentering men, as Cleopatra’s story has been distorted by historians.

“It is a reminder that not all roads lead to Rome. Let it not be the center of your history, for propaganda is a tool favored by the West.”

Cleopatra’s story is captivating from the start, dealing with loss and becoming a pharaoh. We follow Cleo’s journey into motherhood, her romances with Caesar and Marcus Antonius. This is no non-fiction biography, though.

This style was more of a memoir, with Cleopatra often breaking the fourth wall, speaking to the readers and referencing what was to come, which felt a little jarring. The pacing throughout this book was pretty slow to begin with, making it difficult to get into at first, but things picked up a lot towards the end.

Saara El-Arifi’s prose is beautiful, making it worth reading.
